Luffa (Luffa aegyptiaca), also known as Loofah, is a plant of the cucumber family, mostly spread in China, Vietnam and India. It is used as food if harvested early, but when it is fully ripe it becomes very fibrous. The fruit is allowed to mature and used as a sponge after removing everything except the network of xylem fibers. It is usually left to mature and dry out on the vines: only the fibrous skeleton and the seeds are left after the flesh disappears. The seeds are easily shaken out.
